Services for trade union members
UNISON have negotiated hard on your behalf to secure a range of free legal services for you and your family.
These include*:-
- Personal injury advice
- Will making - One free Will per member**. Additional Wills charged at a discounted rate
- Conveyancing - members receive discounted rates for Conveyancing
* To be eligible you must have been a member of UNISON for a minimum of 4 weeks
**Your first Will is free, subsequent Wills are offered at low-cost rates
Some exceptions do apply, they are principally as follows:
- In employment disputes, representation is provided by the union direct. Where legal representation is requested, an application form has to be completed and the union will grant legal assistance where appropriate - mainly where legal proceedings are required and the grievance procedure has been used.
- Personal injury claims for accidents abroad can only be handled if the matter can be pursued through the UK courts, eg those package holiday accidents where the case is covered by the Package Holidays Regulations.
- Family member accidents at work are not covered .
- Medical negligence, tobacco claims, pharmaceutical claims, group actions etc are not covered
Except for employment law, there is a wide range of issues about which telephone advice can be given for up to half an hour using the helpline, but no documents can be considered, and representation following that advice would have to be arranged with private solicitors.
